Sales of The Taos Massacres passed the 1,000 mark early in 2007. A steady
seller in northern New Mexico, the carefully researched historical novel
details the American take-over of New Mexico in 1846 and a subsequent
rebellion against American authority.
The use of the plural Massacres
in the title recognizes that two massacres took place at the time. In
the first massacre, rebels killed a number of Americans and New
Mexicans, including the newly appointed governor, Charles Bent. The
second massacre occurred when a company of volunteers sent north to help
put down the rebellion massacred dozens who fled from the Taos pueblo.
