While much was made of Commodore Dewey’s victory over the Spanish fleet and the
quick surrender of
Manila in America's war with Spain,
little is celebrated about the protracted fighting against Filipinos who
rebelled against
America's annexation of their homeland. But this rebellion largely
defined the military experience of regiments like the 1st North Dakota
Volunteers.
Drawing on unpublished diaries, contemporaneous materials,
and an abundance of photographs and maps, The Boys presents
a vivid and highly personal account of one regiment's participation in a
conflict that saw America become the enemy in a country it had come
to liberate.
